KI Karting International Motorsport - Toninelli wins Winter Cup
Italian youngster Roberto Toninelli who led the final of the Formula A World Championships at South Garda last year until he lost a chain, got 1997 off to a sunshine start at South Garda, Italy last month when he won the Formula Super A Winter Cup. The talented Toninelli qualified in the chronos in eighth position with a 40.77 some 0.25 seconds behind pole man Jenson Button. The Haase/Titan works number one driver finished fifth and forth in the heats to start from grid five in the pre-final, Roberto led most of the pre-final until the very last hairpin on the last lap when Britains Jenson Button Tecno/GKS slipped down the inside in a beautiful move to take the chequeres flag. In the final Roberto put in a brilliant performance using his same Titan engine that he had used in the World Championships at Lonato in September last year and took the chequered flag by an impressive margin. Toninelli was a deserving and popular winner in his Formula Super A race. It was a great day for the likeable Italian and the genial Haase Team who had a third in Formula A and second in the Juniors (see separate stories), but it was definately Toninelli who was the star of the day!
Roberto Toninelli and Jenson Button had a good race in the pre final with the brit taking the pre final and the Italian taking the all important final in what was an impressive performance.
